On July 25, massive wildfires engulfed the forests surrounding the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant in Mersin as extreme heat and severe drought gripped the region. The blaze erupted alarmingly close to Turkey’s soon-to-be-completed $20 billion nuclear facility, which is 90% finished and expected to become fully operational by year’s end. The Turkish government and emergency teams from Russia have started work to extinguish the fire. Watch for details.
